Area problem

Finding the area of a rectangular region is trivial and has been know since antiquity, simply find the product of the length and width, $A=lw.$ The area of circles have also been known for much of recorded history, even though the value of $\pi$ was somewhat elusive. However, finding the area bounded by an arbitrary curve was a a difficult problem that took many centuries to find an exact solution to.
