Geometry has its origins in very practical applications. Looking at the root of the word geometry geo means Earth and metry means measure, so geometry literally has its origins in the measurement of the Earths surface. In particular, a lot of the inspiration for geometry comes from Egypt and their need to take surveys of land for tax purposes. The Nile River in Egypt would flood annually and change the shape of the land and the Egyptians were expected to pay taxes on the amount of land they owned but it varied due to these floods.
The surveyors were responsible for measuring this land and they used ropes to measure the land and were referred to by others as "rope stretchers." These rope stretchers were well regarded for their mathematical skills.
